Forestry is the economic sector related to the management and use of forest resources. Forestry production is essentially divided into wood resources, and non-wood resources. Wood resources are mainly used in the building, furniture manufacturing, and paper industries, while the non-wood resources subsector is principally associated with the cultivation of mushrooms and other edible products and with energy production either through charcoal or with the use of forest residues as biomass.
The value of the whole forestry production sector was 416.6 billion yen in 2011, a 1% decrease from the previous year. The sector is mainly composed of two products: wood and mushrooms. Wood production accounts for 46% of the sector, while mushroom production accounts for 52%.
